Lucy (2014), written and directed by Luc Besson and starring Scarlett Johansson, is a philosophical sci-fi film about a woman who unlocks 100% of her brain capacity and ultimately merges with time and the universe itself, gaining god-like powers. While the film offers a compelling take on existence, it overlooks the true Creator behind life and the cosmos.
From CPH4 to Creation: What Lucy Gets Half Right
The story follows Lucy, whose abilities evolve after a synthetic drug called CPH4 floods her system. Fictionally said to aid fetal development, CPH4 loosely mirrors real proteins like FGF2, Laminin, and EGF—critical for growth and structure.
However, in the film, the effects of the drug are far more powerful, triggering rapid evolution and allowing Lucy to see that everything had a beginning— much like what the Scriptures say.
100% Brain Capacity: “What proof do we have?”
When Lucy reaches 100% brain capacity, she makes a striking observation:
“Time is the only true unit of measure. It gives proof of the existence of matter. Without time, we don’t exist.” She illustrates this with a simple analogy: “Film a car speeding down the road. Speed up the image infinitely, and the car disappears. So, what proof do we have of its existence?“

What Proof Do We Have?
Intelligent Design
The film spends 90 minutes proving what it denies—that design, order, and time itself scream Creator. Like Interstellar, its “matrix” reveals the intricate complexity of communication and life, interwoven in what can only be described as Intelligent Design. When man tries to explain life without God, he ends up quoting Genesis—just in slow motion.
Genesis 1:1 “Time Itself Was Created”
Unintentionally, the movie aligns with a core biblical truth: Time was created. Genesis 1:1 opens with, “In the beginning…”—an explicit declaration that God created time. TIME itself was spoken into existence just as Adam was.
Humanity does not exist apart from time because we were created within it. We are not eternal beings evolving into gods; we are finite creatures, dependent on the One who made us.
Knowledge is revealed only to God’s children
As Lucy nears full cognitive capacity, she remarks: “This knowledge… I’m not even sure mankind is ready for it.” And she’s right. Outside of God, humanity cannot comprehend the depth of life, time, or purpose.
Left to itself, human pride mocks what it cannot explain. “One plus one has never equaled two“—for the most basic things in life speak to a more profound mystery, that is why the “secret things belong to God” (Deuteronomy 29:29)

Knowledge in the Last Days
As knowledge increased on Earth, the corrupt used it to exploit others and mock God—becoming lovers of self, exchanging truth for lies, thinking they knew better than their Creator (2 Timothy 3:1–7; Romans 1:22–25).

Knowledge and Fear of God
Rather than turning to the Creator, the movie Lucy embraces Gnostic ideas—seeking salvation by merging with the universe, apart from any reverence for God. Today, we see a generation overflowing with knowledge but lacking fear of God.
