How Satan can cause sickness and mental illness

There is a distinction between (mild) depression and psychotic behavior. While both are forms of mental illness, the latter is considered demonization in the Bible. Not all diseases are caused by the devil. There is also “divine afflictions.” (2 Corinthians 1:1-11)

Not all illnesses are caused by the devil.

Genetic illnesses: Boy and the mute man

Scripture makes a distinction between diseases and demon possession. Death and illnesses are inevitable, but Jesus did cast out a demon that was mute. When it had gone out, the mute man spoke. (Luke 11:14)

The “demon-possessed boy” had symptoms of epilepsy was also possessed by a demon.

Mark 9:14
So they brought the boy. But when the evil spirit saw Jesus, it threw the child into a violent convulsion, and he fell to the ground, writhing and foaming at the mouth.

“I command you to come out of this child and never enter him again!” (v25). “This kind can be cast out only by prayer.” (v29)

Gerasene demoniac: Pschotic behavior

Jesus healed humans controlled by demonic entities. They were entirely out of control because several demons took control of their faculties and tormented them. In short, they had psychotic behavior.

When Jesus came to their area, He brought deliverance for them from the powers of darkness by commanding legions to leave the body of a demoniac insane man.

Matthew 8:28-31
When He arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met Him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way…

The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.”

Satan has three abilities to make us depressed

1. Lose hope and self-pity

The enemy wants us to lose hope to sulk in depression and self-pity. He uses the spirit of condemnation. In Christ, we are free from condemnation. (Romans 8:1)

2. Confuse and accuse us

He confuses and tempts us to gain a foothold while accusing us before God. (Genesis 3:1-4; Ephesians 4:27; Revelation 12:10)

3. Fear and condemnation

He throws lies such as fear and condemnation to captivate our minds. (John 8:44; Job 2:9; 2 Timothy 2:26)

Greater is He that is in you than he who is in the world!

Anxiety is in the mind, just as repentance is a mental activity. Ask the Holy Spirit to renew your mind. Whatever is the root cause of your depression, the Lord hears the cry of the righteous (Psalm 34:17), and righteousness comes by faith in Christ. (Romans 3:22)

The Lord hears the cry of the righteous.
